Machine Directive 2006/42/EG

What is the Machinery Directive?

In addition to DIN IEC 82079-1, the Machinery Directive is extremely important in technical communication. The purpose of this set of regulations on machine safety within the EU is to maintain a uniform level of protection for accident prevention. It contains requirements for the design and construction of machinery products. This provides a new legal basis for making machinery products available on the market and putting them into service.

In addition, the regulation defines rules for the free movement of machinery products in the European Union. Annex III Operating Instructions and Annex IX Assembly Instructions for incomplete machines, for example, define requirements for documentation. The new Machinery Regulation EU 2023/1230 of June 29, 2023 replaces the previously valid Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

The technical documentation and the Machinery Directive

There is no way around the Machinery Directive when it comes to creating technical documentation for machines and plants. In this machine directive, it is legally defined that each machine delivery must be enclosed with an operating manual. The following applies: Machines without documentation may not be placed on the market under any circumstances. Clear and comprehensive technical information (e.g. by indicating residual risks) in the documentation should facilitate the use of the machines and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
