Knorr-Bremse: Individual publications from a single source

Reduced publication costs convinced Knorr-Bremse

The Knorr-Bremse Group, based in Munich, Germany, is the world's leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles. For more than 100 years the company has pioneered the development, production and marketing of state-of-the-art braking systems. Other lines of business include automatic door systems, rail vehicle air conditioning systems and torsional vibration dampers for internal combustion engines. Before implementing an XML content management system, the technical writers at Knorr-Bremse used Quick-Silver® (Interleaf). The foreign subsidiaries in the USA, England, Spain and Austria were using FrameMaker® and Word®.

To improve internal processes, integrate external resources, create fast and reliable customer specific publications and assure the high-quality standard of content and consistency, Knorr-Bremse decided to buy the XML content management system TIM and the XML-generator TIM-XGEN. The solution partner of TIM, Sinteg AG, was responsible for the realization of this project.

First summary

Hans Reif, Technical Documentation Manager, is sure of having made the right choice. "The content management system TIM is valuable due to the excellent and complete performance of customer requirements in customized contents, variation of layout and different formats. This is real Single Source Publishing with minimal costs and efforts."

Worldwide access

Today the technical writers at Knorr-Bremse create technical and maintenance manuals with the XML content management system TIM and FrameMaker®. Additionally, specialized external technical writers have access to TIM via terminal server, including the technical writers at the foreign subsidiaries in the USA, England, Spain and Austria.

The XML-generator TIM-XGEN automates the publication process. For example, maintenance tables are created automatically or documents are converted and published in customized content structures and layouts, for example in Word®.

Manuals for customers world-wide

Knorr-Bremse has foreign locations in 27 countries. All publications have to be translated and delivered in more than 13 languages. TIM manages the whole translation process via XML. External translation service providers translate in SDL Trados®. The translated text modules are saved and organized in TIM.
